Description
Ian and I went to the park last Sunday and found this butterfly. It was more hopping than fluttering/flying and won't alight in any of the greenery around it. It took me quite a while to get a decent shot of it. There were two of them and I think they were trying to mate but crazy me had to disturb their romanceI used PhotoFiltre to cover some distracting shadows.
Something simple and I hope you like it

Cropping right is not an option since it would destroy the shadow.
And cropping left would make the image look somewhat imbalanced.
So, I stick to the way you cropped it.
Last tiny bit I'd uprade: 1px brownish border before the black borders start to
frame the image.

would't crop the right side indeed, NO WAY
But I don't know..... leaving it just like this you lose a lot from the detail.

Agree on not cropping off the right as the shadow would get lost.
Kind of think that all but the butterfly needs to be slightly darker.
The surface on which the butterfly stands looks rather bright from strong sun probably and that disturbs a little. If you can darken that part it would be better IMHO.
Keep up the good work!
...and say hi to Ian!

I also had the problem of choosing between a detailed subject or a full view of the shadow >_<
I decided not to crop the shadow due to the same reason you mentioned...and Ian says hello back to you too Patrick
Night night to everyone for now...already 1:45am here in Japan...see you all asap

But this is a tricky one - the butterfly/shadow combination is what makes the image, you can't afford to lose that but it does force the butterfly uninterestingly just off-centre. You could try extending the image to the left to put the butterfly in the classic 1/3 position on the right - it would probably be too small to view comfortably here but in real life the printed image might work well - just another carrot to throw into the stew.
edit: nah changed my mind - you can look at the details too long and forget to view the image - i like it just like it is. It's unusual and causes debate and that's one sign of a good piece of art - no-one can agree!
My only crit then would be the butterfly's body gets camouflaged with the gravel but it's the wings that draw the attention anyway so - just looking at the details again!
